The Egg
The Egg is an annual Mallaz presents... music event featuring artists from a range of genres. Taking place over the Easter weekend each year The Egg is staged as a birthday celebration for Mallaz presents... founder Mallaz. 2014 will see The Egg return for its third year after two previous successful events at venues in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Egg was first staged at The Telegraph near Newcastle’s Central Station on Saturday 6th April 2012 and featured live music as well as DJs. Hip Hop duo Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze with guest vocalist Eliza Lawson headlined a seven-strong bill comprised solely of Tyneside based acts. The live bands to perform at The Egg were Funk band Gingersnap and The Style Pile, Krautrock trio Parastatic and Alternative group Artisam. The opening set at The Egg was a solo acoustic set performed by Baiqian Jiang and the event also saw Brotha Priah performing a live Beatbox session and a DJ set from Greenline DJ. The Telegraph was filled to capacity for The Egg making it the most successful event that Mallaz had organised at that point in time.

The second instalment of The Egg took place on Saturday 30th March 2013 at The Cluny in Ouseburn, Newcastle. Mallaz presents... The Egg 2013 featured four live bands, again all based on Tyneside. The event was headlined by Big Beat Bronson, a Hip Hop group formed in the summer of 2012 including Baron Von Alias & MistaBreeze, with special guests ‘The Gentlemen of Rock and Roll’ So What Robot and support from Rock band Warning! and Alternative act Kredo. The decision to change venue for Mallaz presents... The Egg 2013 was made to accommodate a larger expected audience. The Egg again became the most successful event staged by Mallaz when the second instalment sold out The Cluny in 2013.
Planning for Mallaz presents... The Egg 3.0 for over Easter weekend in 2014 is already underway as Mallaz looks to better The Egg 2013 and will be celebrating his 30th birthday as well as a visit from two of his best friends Paul Thorpe and Abigail Adamson from Perth, Australia.
The inspiration for The Egg’s title came from Eggus Maximus, who Mallaz follows on Twitter, and the songs The Egg by Happy Mondays and Egg Rush by Flowered Up. Despite being held over Easter weekend the name for The Egg is only Easter related by coincidence. |
